Introducing progression levels and a revamped profile

We've launched a new progression levels system, fairer scoring for challenges and code reviews, and a completely revamped profile page. Here's what's changed.

Matt Studdert·20 Feb 2026

We're excited to announce two big updates to Frontend Mentor: a brand-new progression levels system and a completely revamped profile page.

These changes are driven by three things we've been hearing from the community:

  • Scoring should better reflect the real effort behind harder challenges
  • It's not always clear when you're ready to take on harder projects
  • Your profile should give you more insight into your growth as a developer

Let's go through what we've changed in response to your feedback.

Fairer scoring

Until now, challenge points scaled linearly: Newbie gave 10 points, Junior 20, Intermediate 30, Advanced 40, and Guru 50. But anyone who's attempted challenges across those levels knows the jump in time and effort is anything but linear. An Advanced challenge can take 5-10x longer than a Newbie one, yet it rewards only 4x the points.

Code review points had a similar issue. You earned a flat 20 points for every review, regardless of whether you were reviewing a simple Newbie solution or diving deep into a complex Guru project. Reviewing more complex solutions requires greater understanding and effort, but that wasn't reflected in the points.

Here's what the new scoring looks like:

Challenge points

| Difficulty | Old | New | |---|---|---| | Newbie | 10 | 10 | | Junior | 20 | 25 | | Intermediate | 30 | 50 | | Advanced | 40 | 100 | | Guru | 50 | 200 |

The new scale is exponential, which much better represents the real effort curve as you move up in difficulty.

Code review points

| Difficulty | Old | New | |---|---|---| | Newbie | 20 | 3 | | Junior | 20 | 5 | | Intermediate | 20 | 10 | | Advanced | 20 | 15 | | Guru | 20 | 20 |

Code reviews now reflect the difficulty of the solution being reviewed. Giving useful, specific feedback on a Guru-level solution is a lot harder than on a Newbie one, and the points now reflect that.

Important: Mentor Scores are not being updated retroactively. All scoring changes take effect going forward only. Your existing score stays exactly as it is. This was a tricky decision, but we have never updated scores retroactively after prior scoring system changes, so we decided to remain consistent with this update.

Progression levels

We're introducing a 5-level progression system to help you understand where you are in your learning journey and when you're ready to take on harder challenges.

Here are the level thresholds:

| Level | Points required | |---|---| | Level 1 | 10 | | Level 2 | 50 | | Level 3 | 200 | | Level 4 | 600 | | Level 5 | 1,500 |

But here's a key detail: points alone aren't enough. Your level is determined by whichever is lower - your point level or your challenge level. Your challenge level is based on the highest difficulty challenge you've completed.

For example, if you've earned 250 points (enough for Level 3) but have only completed Newbie and Junior challenges, your progression level will be capped at Level 2. To reach Level 3, you'd also need to complete an Intermediate challenge.

This dual requirement ensures that progression reflects genuine growth. It encourages you to push yourself with harder challenges rather than only accumulating points from easier ones.

Revamped profile page

Your profile page has been completely redesigned to give you much more insight into your progress.

The updated profile page showing the progress tab

Tabbed layout

The profile now uses tabs to organize your information, making it easier to find what you're looking for.

Your Progress tab

This is a new private tab visible only to you. It includes:

  • A level progress bar showing how far you are towards the next level
  • A clear breakdown of what you need to unlock the next level (both points and challenge difficulty)
  • Activity charts showing your challenges and code reviews broken down by difficulty
  • A quick stats grid with your total points, challenges completed, learning paths, and code reviews given

Solutions and Code Reviews tabs

Your submitted solutions and code reviews each have their own tab, so you can easily browse through your history for either one.

Achievements tab

Your achievements now have their own dedicated tab, giving them the space they deserve and making it easier to see what you've unlocked and what's still up for grabs.

We're aware that we still only have Mentor of the Week/Month/Year achievements and badges. We plan to add a better achievement system to help you track key milestones and actions.

Go check it out

Head over to your profile to see the new layout and check where you stand with the progression levels. And if you're looking to level up, browse the challenges and find one that pushes you a little further than your comfort zone, or find someone else's solution to give helpful feedback on.

We hope you like the changes. Please let us know your thoughts inside Discord. Happy coding!
