Launch Countdown Timer with React, Custom CSS & 3D Flip Animation

Solution retrospective
I'm most proud of building the 3D flip animation and logic in React to create a smooth countdown timer. Tuning the visual details—like shadow lighting, card rotation, scaling, and especially finding the right perspective—was really rewarding. Next time, I'd explore handling time calculations with standard ISO dates or target timestamps to make it even more production-ready.
What challenges did you encounter, and how did you overcome them?Managing the two-part card flip animation was a big challenge since it was my first time implementing this effect. I spent a lot of time getting the timing and 3D transforms right.
A key takeaway was learning to use the key prop in React to re-trigger CSS animations smoothly on state changes, rather than manually toggling CSS classes. Toggling classes often felt clunky for continuous animations, so using key to unmount/remount elements was a game-changer for recurring clock ticks. I'll definitely keep class toggles for user-triggered interactions like hover states, and use key resets for continuous data-driven animations.
I'd love feedback on achieving the most realistic 3D flip animation! Specifically:
-
Lighting & Shadows: How do you usually tweak brightness/shadows to feel truly natural during a 3D fold?
-
Perspective & Scaling: Do frontend devs usually find the ideal
perspectivevalue through trial and error, or is there a recommended math/ratio formula based on component dimensions?
Any advice or best practices on refining 3D CSS physics would be super appreciated!
