The web development landscape has changed drastically over recent years. The rise of AI tooling has changed developer workflows worldwide, and the rate of change and innovation is only increasing.

Over the past year, many people have joined our community, asking questions like, "Will developers still have a job in five years?" and "Should I bother learning to code if AI is just going to do it all?" Given all the recent technological advancements and mass layoffs in large tech companies, there's undoubtedly some nervousness in the industry.

However, companies aren't going to stop creating online businesses any time soon, and the demand for skilled developers will always outstrip supply. Will a developer's day-to-day workflow change? Of course! But that's been happening since before we had punch cards.

In my opinion, there's never been a better time to be a developer. There are so many incredible learning resources out there, and the barrier to entry continues to get lower. This means web development is becoming more widely accessible, which is a good thing!

Access to AI tooling only enhances this, with the opportunity to essentially have an AI pair programmer or teacher with you in your code editor or browser at all times.

Any developer who harnesses the capabilities of AI assistants has the potential to excel at an even faster rate than before.

Kent C. Dodds: AI Assistants course

I was delighted to see Kent C. Dodds launch a new free course about how he works with AI assistants. Seeing how other developers use tools is an excellent way to discover new workflows and patterns that work for you, and Kent is a brilliant instructor.

If you're worried about the rise of AI tooling, I'd also recommend reading Josh Comeau's article "The End of Front-End Development" and watching Brad Traversy's recent YouTube video "Stop Worrying About AI!". They both seem to share similar viewpoints and will hopefully help you look to the future with excitement instead of worry! πŸ™‚
