Mobile First Solution Using Flexbox and Custom Attributes

Should I have used data- attributes instead? What does mobile first mean? Does it just mean that you do the mobile as the default and have media queries for the desktop version? It looks fine on desktop and mobile, but it looks bad with widths in between. How can I change that?
