Solution retrospective

What is a recommended approach for styling dropdowns? In my solution, I defer to the browser default once the dropdown is active. I explored a few solutions (react-bootstrap or manually over-riding) but they seemed more complicated than I would have guessed.

Any thoughts on best practices?
