Solution retrospective
Making the tasks draggable is a lot more difficult than it looks, and halfway through I gave up trying to code it myself and used Sortable.js to create a much cleaner and simpler solution. I also added functionality where the user's preferred theme and tasks are stored such that they are both reused upon reload.
